Healthy Burger Swap, Husband Approved!

Anyone else doing their best to make healthier choices since January 1? The struggle is real! Unfortunately, I have the genetics of an elephant.. so it’s a struggle I have to commit to.

The weekends are where I struggle the MOST. With every cookie aisle I pass by and with every restaurant menu I read there’s a soft voice whispering TREAT YO’ SELF in my ear.  And OH, do I listen.

This weekend we tried something different though! We stayed in for a night and made some… wait for it… TURKEY BURGERS! This is something that wouldn’t normally make the top of Trent’s list, but one bite in and I quote, “Oh man, these are so good!”. I also served them with some roasted sweet potato fries. Because, FRIES. You have to.

I know a lot of friends that are currently doing, or are about to embark on, a Whole 30 journey–and these can totally pass! Trent and I tried the Whole 30 a few years ago right before we moved to Chattanooga. It was technically more of a Whole 15, because we couldn’t hang. But it was honestly one of the best times my body has ever looked AND felt, mixed with a lot of a miserableness because I WANT A PIECE OF BREAD. That is all I will say about my Whole 30 experience.

Now before I post the pictures of said burgers… you must know, we obviously did not eat ours to Whole 30 standards. I like cheese, man. But wrap yo’ patty in lettuce, throw in some pico and avocado.. bing, bang, boom. Singing the Whole 30 tune.

Ours were eaten on white bread, because we’re from Kentucky and we don’t have the time or the class for buying things like hamburger buns. And we had cheddar cheese and avocado on top. Pepper jack cheese would have been delicious, though, and I would highly recommend trying that! Yet another thing I forgot to buy at the grocery store… #wifelife.

Here’s the recipe:

Jalepeno Turkey Burgers- serves 4

  • 1lb ground turkey- fat content to your liking, I used 93% lean
  • 1 jalepeno, diced
  • 1 shallot or 1/2 onion- minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Kosher Salt & Pepper to taste

Heat Skillet over medium heat, spray with cooking spray or use olive oil to coat pan.

Mix all ingredients together, form into 4 patties. Cook on each side for 5 mins!

Sweet Potato Fries- makes 2 sheet pans

  • 2 sweet potatos (or about 1/2 a sweet potato per person, if making for more than 4)
  • 2 tbs olive oil
  • Chili Powder
  • Ground Cumin
  • Salt and Pepper to Taste

Preheat oven to 425° F and line sheet pans with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Cut sweet potatoes into wedges or fries. Place in a large bowl or ziplock bag and coat with olive oil- stirring around to make sure all fries are coated. Lay onto sheet pan in single layer and season with chili powder, ground cumin, S&P to taste. Bake to 20 mins, flip the potatoes around with a spatula, and bake for another 10-15 mins until crispy.
